A senior Meta representative has rejected claims that the company can access private WhatsApp chats.

The denial came after several users filed a lawsuit in a US court on January 23, which accused Meta of misleading them about WhatsApp’s privacy features.

The case was submitted in San Francisco by users from countries including Australia, Mexico, South Africa, and India. They argued that the app’s end-to-end encryption is not as private as Meta claims and are seeking financial compensation.

According to the complaint, the goal is to reveal what they describe as “serious privacy violations and fraud” affecting WhatsApp users who believe their messages are secure.

Meta’s communications director, Andy Stone, responded on X on January 26. He called the allegations “categorically false and absurd”, while adding that the lawsuit was a “frivolous work of fiction”.

Although Meta has not issued an official statement about the case, the company’s encryption information page reiterates that end-to-end encryption ensures only the sender and recipient can view messages.

Telegram CEO Pavel Durov expressed support for the lawsuit. He stated, “You’d have to be braindead to believe WhatsApp is secure in 2026. When we analyzed how WhatsApp implemented its ‘encryption’, we found multiple attack vectors”.
